a) hope and wish are used to talk about things we would like to happen or exist.

   =>  I hope Manchester win the European Cup.

   =>  I wish I lived in Canada.


b) We use hope [+ subject + present tense verb] OR [+ to + infinitive verb] for things we think are possible:

   =>  I hope she finishes in time to come with us.

   =>  We hope to have the results next week.


c) We use wish [+ subject + past tense verb] for things we do NOT think are possible:

   =>  I wish I had a more interesting job.

   =>  My sister wishes she could move to Australia.

a) wish [+ subject + would + infinitive verb] is used when we don’t like the way a person acts and we would like them to change:

   =>  I wish my teacher would stop saying ‘OK’?

   =>  Jack wished his boss would recognise his hard work.

*I might be stupid‘ would be better English!


b) wish [+ subject + past perfect verb] is used to show that we regret something that happened, or did not happen in the past:

   =>  I wish I had studied languages at university.

   =>  I wish we hadn’t moved to the States. I miss my old friends a lot.
