Year 1: Cycle 2: Week 7

~ Day 1: psychedelic / hullabaloo ~

WORDPICS of the DAY: ‘psychedelic / hullabaloo‘ ~ I made a series of these psychedelic Arc de Triomphes, and had a terrible time trying to choose which one to publish. In the end I went with a purple and yellow hullabaloo. Wild!

WORDPIC
psychedelic‘ ~ Something with exaggerated or strange colours, sounds or other sensations; ‘hullabaloo‘ ~ Usually a big, busy, crazy noise but I believe in visual hullabaloos too, and I’m the artist-author, so what can you do?! 😀

~ Day 2: hanging out ~

EXPRESSION of the DAY: ‘hanging out‘ ~ On a sunny Sunday afternoon, what better than hanging out in the park? The ‘Jardin des Plantes’ in Paris in this case. Nothing better, it seems.

EXPRESSIONS: ‘hanging out‘ ~ For some reason all my teenage French English students knew this expression, which simply means chatting in groups somewhere outside of the house and not doing anything much at all. Maybe because they were particularly good at it. ‘Chilling’ could be another word for it…

~ Day 3: patriotism ~

WORDPIC of the DAY: ‘patriotism‘ ~ If there’s one thing the French are good at (and of course there are several!), it’s patriotism. Any excuse to roll out the tricolour, in one form or another, and they will take it. In this case it’s the President’s stand, at Place de la Concorde, for the 14th July ceremony. Vive la France!

VOCABULARY
patriotism‘ ~ The expression of pride in your country; showing that you are happy to be the nationality you are. The French are particularly good at it!

 ~ Day 4: paradox ~

WORDPIC of the DAY: ‘paradox‘ ~ I have an iPhone 5. The words in the photo say ‘Photographed with an iPhone 6‘. What is the truth? Well, in fact they are both true! The photo was taken with an iPhone 5 AND an iPhone 6. My iPhone 5 took a picture of a photo (or a photo of a picture..) taken with an iPhone 6. Everything is possible!

VOCABULARYparadox‘ ~ When two things or facts exist at the same time, when logic would tell us that only one of them is possible, not both. For example, it is perhaps a paradox that although I don’t eat snails or frogs’ legs, I have lived in France for 20 years now! (I do love croissants and cheese though…)

 ~ Day 5: flock ~

WORDPIC of the DAY: ‘flock‘ ~ Seagulls and pigeons flock around some Seineside scraps like tourists around a street singer. Almost like a scene from Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’, thanks to some sly Sabbish trickery!

VOCABULARY: ‘flock‘ ~ This can be a noun – a flock of birds is simply a group of birds, often when they are flying, all moving in the same way. Or it can be a verb for birds – or for people – acting like birds: The ‘One Direction’ fans flocked to the concert hall. ‘Flock’ also works with sheep!

~ Day 6: clowning around ~

EXPRESSION of the DAY: ‘clowning around‘ ~ Stop clowning around and pay attention! This wonderful clown, now modified at least twice, was produced by Paris street artist C215, who specialises in turning boring telephone and electricity junction boxes into works of art!

EXPRESSIONclowning around‘ ~ Acting like a clown, doing stupid stuff, being a (funny) idiot! ‘Clowning around’ isn’t really ‘bad’, just silly, especially men acting like big kids 😀 Me, clown around? Never!

 ~ Day 7: romantic ~

WORDPIC of the DAY: ‘romantic‘ ~ They say that Paris is one of the most romantic cities in the world, and with images like this one, who am I to argue?

VOCABULARY: ‘romantic‘ ~ Relating to love or loving relations between two people. Something that makes you think about love. Mwahh!
